WORKSHOP: THE ART OF DARNING WITH EMMA MATHEWS

Socko is on a mission! This is because the most sustainable clothes are the ones we already own. If we can extend the lives of the things we have and embrace a more conscious consumer mindset, we will have a positive effect on people and our planet. Not to mention that darning is highly therapeutic, rewarding and is a commitment of care that brings us closer to our possessions.

The workshop is designed to be an introduction to darning for complete beginners. It’s suitable for all levels of textile know-how, from those who have never threaded a needle to avid knitters. The session teaches the fundamentals of how to create a secure mend and sparks inspiration for the versatility of the technique. It’s a fun, hands-on, informal session that spreads the joy of bringing life back to damaged clothing - combining form and function in a way that will serve you for years to come.

During this 2 1/2 hour workshop, we'll start with a brief history of techniques from different cultures and look at examples and tools. The majority of the time will then be practical as Socko founder Emma teaches you how to darn your own clothing. You're welcome to bring items of your own that need mending, there'll be fabric to practise on. and you'll go home not only with your acquired skills but with your very own mending kit as well.

Your teacher Emma is the founder of sustainable British sock brand Socko. She’s a life-long maker and is passionate about the positive, mindful impact craft can have on our wellbeing. Previous students say:

"Fantastic darning course that took an absolute beginner like me to darning my first sock. Emma is a wonderful teacher providing her knowledge, tips and tricks in a way that is engaging and easy to understand."
Mary D

"I’m a keen knitter, and have blindly attempted repairs before, but I was blown away by Emma’s workshop. It was well thought-out and sensitive to different people’s craft experiences. I would recommend it to everyone!"
Daniel

As always, students receive 10% off on purchases made on the day of the workshop. And of course, there is tea and nibbles available during class.

WORKSHOP: DROP YOUR SPINDLE - BEGINNERS' INTRODUCTION TO SPINNING WITH SOFIA OTTERBECK

Learn to spin yarn on a drop spindle! The drop spindle is one of the oldest tools known to man, used to twist fiber to make them stronger for all kind of purposes. Using a drop spindle is a simple, beginner-friendly method that allows you to try out hand spinning without the huge investment of a spinning wheel. You can use it with all sorts of fibres: wool tops, alpaca and plant fibres, whatever you have in your fibre stash. In this practical, hands-on workshop, you’ll go from fleece to finished yarn in just one session.

Included  is your very own hand spinning kit: a drop spindle and 100g of undyed wool ready for you to create the most wonderful yarn unique to you!
At the heart of this workshop is of course mastering the drop spindle itself and the art of spinning thread. You'll also gain proficiency in plying your spun thread to yarn, and by the end, you'll walk away with everything you need to know to continue your spinning journey at home.

We will cover:
Spinning singles using a drop spindle
Controlling twist and drafting
Plying and finishing your yarn

Sofia’s love for working with textile fibres was ignited at a young age. Throughout her life, she’s been surrounded by crafting women who are committed to preserving old crafts and knowledge and she’s always been an eager learner. In 2018 Sofia decided to leave her career as a teacher, dedicating all her time to focus on knitting and spinning yarn, and to passionately communicate all her knowledge to others. Sofia’s mission is helping people discover their creative potential and uncover new ways to express themselves through the art of fibre and knitting.
